New Term Update

Hello everyone and welcome back to January, we have some exciting updates for you:

NSR blog-01

NSR 2016

First of all NSR is back this year and we are planning on attending after our year out! If you don’t know what NSR is; it’s the National Student Rodeo, a kayaking festival/party weekend down the road at the White Water Centre in Nottingham. It’s a weekend of free style kayaking and features races, time trails and play boating. While there is a lot of skill on show, it’s a student event so expectations are not to high so don’t feel put off! Off the water there is a festival style atmosphere with other university teams, spectator areas, visits from Kayaking manufactures (chance to spend those xmas pennies) and 2 large parties in the evening!

The dates are the 4th – 6th of March and involves 2 nights of camping. There is also a theme each year, (the blog image should give some clues) and gives us a chance to dress up as a team, and the winning team gets loads of prizes, like literally boat loads! Our 2 events organisers are getting the final arrangements done but if you want to come you can register your interest now, check your inbox for more information. The weekend will cost £50 that covers the tickets, accommodation and entry into the parties and one nights of food. You’ll see more information  on the blog and on your e-mails.

Varsity 2016

This year the University of Lincoln Students’ Union Activities and Hull University AU will be competing in 3rd ‘Humber Games’, or Varsity. And this year we are pleased to be entering a team to compete against Hull University Canoe Club. While we work out the details of events  etc.. The date will be on the 16th of April and this year Hull are hosting. We’ll have more details soon once we agree of the details with HUCC.

Sessions resume

Brayford Sessions are going to resume on the 13th of January, please don’t be fooled by the mild December we had last month, it will be cold! So while your loans still fresh in your account buy some cheap thermals.

Pool Sessions are resuming on the 17th of January!

Hoodie & Mid-Layers

We understand you might be getting frustrated with the lack of Hoodies this year, and even though we’ve taken your money your still are waiting. So here is what is happening.

In October we connected PlayerLayer the SU supplier in placing an order of Hoodies & MidLayers, We wanted to add our logo and members names so it required the bespoke design/alterations so needed to be cleared by Player Layer before we took orders. Then we advertised in October for hoodies as normal, and took orders right until the 16th of November. Then we allowed 2 weeks to pay for the hoodies. As always with bespoke orders (as in the past) we took payment first. This is done to make sure we have to money to pay for production and also to make sure people who have ordered some can pay for them, and not being left out of pocket.

Once payment was confirmed we sent off the order to Player Layer on the 7th December. Understanding the festive period would mean the 4 week production time would be extended, so we hoped these be delivered at the start of term. PlayerLayer then responded adding specifications of design on the Mid-Layer needed to be changed as in the time of the original design a new policy was introdcued about location of members names, this added another week onto production time.

On the end of term (17th of December) PlayerLayer contacted us about Stock issues with the hoodies, Issue being there is no more stock of the hoodie until February. by this point all of our committee members had returned/returning home and SU drop-ins had finished so the issue was not raised for the SU. PlayerLayer offered an alternative product but seeing this not what members have ordered we thought it would not be right advertising one product and then receiving another.

The Player Layer office, production team , Students Union office then closed for the festive period on the 24th. Meaning nothing was resolved during the break.

Upon return we’ve now contacted both PlayerLayer & The Students’ Union about the problem we are still facing. These have been passed onto the Vice President who is now looking into this issue.

And thats were we are about hoodies & mid-layers, we’ve been effected by mis-communication from PlayerLayer, Red tape and being told about issues to late. We are still aiming to get the original hoodies & mid-layers which have been ordered to you ASAP. And we’ll keep you updated on the blog.

Other Kit News

Our new helmets & spray decks have been ordered and will be with us soon! We’ve also added another pair of split paddles based from feedback in Wales, these are of better quality and will easier to use in the case of if your primary paddles break or are lost.

Communication feedback

Before the end of term it was raised on improving feedback, so from 2016 we’ll be publishing agendas & minutes of committee meetings, if you have any ideas then we’d like to hear them! Drop us an e-mail!

Happy Paddling!

River Wye Canoe Trip

Well what can you do if you didn’t quite make it up to NSR, keep paddling of course! And why not because this weekend turned out to be a great success, With it being low season on the Wye allowed us to leisurely paddle 30 miles across 2 days, with plenty of camping in-between making it for a great weekend canoeing, regardless if a rabbit was running around or not. Will we make it back to the Wye soon? ‘Wye not ‘ey’

Committee Elections

An always fun couple of weeks as members vote and discuss who should be on the next years committee and help run the club, this year saw loads of people applying for roles right across the committee and was a great competition to see play out. If you want to see who are on the committee at the moment check out the committee page on this blog here.

10 years of L.U.C.K

After a long awaited build up for this celebration of our 10 year anniversary, in April team members from our 10 year history were invited back to Lincoln to celebrate on the 18th of April, with the NSR DJ’s, our fashionable hoodies on display and 1000+ photos slide showing though out it was a great night to celebrate the great achievement.

Wales

Our new events organisers were keen to visit wales before the year closed and hosted a weekend away in North Wales, white water kayaking, With a full bunk house and plenty of thermals the weekend was a success! Despite the river levels, now we are just waiting for some photos..

These are just highlights of our year to date and we’d love to share all of what we’ve been up to however there has been so much. But as always you can look back onto this blog to see what we’ve been up to as well as our  Facebook and Twitter.

But in the mean time enjoy your new year celebrations and as always,

Happy paddling!

Christmas is coming!

CORRECTION: The last pool session will now take place on the 29th of  November, this is due to issues with the pool operator

Can you believe it, the end of the term is not far away! So we’ll break down what is happening between now and the end of term in 4 weeks.

1. Intro trip 2

If you missed the first one or never been then this is a great chance for you to join us for another intro to white water trip. If you want to come along then e-mail the club ASAP to grab a place.

2. December wales trip

This trip is making a welcome return! The weekend away to wales right in the middle of December sounds like a bad idea, but however it promises to be a great weekend of paddling and with no tents in sight as we are kipping up in a bunkhouse for the weekend. It’ll be cold but it’ll be fun, and isn’t that what kayaking is all about.  Members should of got an e-mail about attending this trip and more information.

3. Christmas meal

This is a big one! The annual L.U.C.K Christmas Meal will be taking place this year on the 8th of December at Walkabout. This is a formal affair so dress to impress and enjoy a night of festive food, awards and VIP treatment at Home. More information about pricing will be up soon once we get it. But clear your dairy and prep those outfits!

4. Hoodies & Midlayers

We’ll be placing our order with Player Layer for hoodies & mid layers this month, but before we do we need to receive payments. If you’ve placed an order than please can you pay for Canoe & Kayak Hoodie or MidLayer at the SU reception before Tuesday the 24th of November.

5. Last sessions

The last session this year will be on the 9th of December, this aligns with all SU sports teams sessions which end on the 13th of December, however there will not be a pool session on the 13th due to the wales trip. The last pool session will take place on the 29th of November.

6.Other dates for your dairy

19th – 26th of March (first week of the easter break) is our provisional dates for our trip to Newquay, so clear your calendar once again.

See you all at these amazing events!

Happy Paddling!

Fresher Taster Sessions, all you need to know!

blog post-01

Enjoy a taster of Kayaking & Canoeing right here in Lincoln! The University of Lincoln Canoe & Kayak club is hosting 4 taster sessions to allow you to try this exciting sport over freshers. We’ll explain all you need to know on this post.

When Can I come and have a go.

We are hosting 4 sessions across 2 days. The 23rd of September and the 30th of September. With taster sessions at 2pm & 3pm. Please show up only to one as we need to allow everyone a chance to take part.

What should I expect?

You’ll spend 1 hour taking part, 15mins gearing up, warming up and a quick safety briefing then we head onto Brayford Pool, allow you to paddle around, we’ll play some games and activities as well as teach basic skills. It’s flat water so no rapids so we don’t plan anyone to fall in.

Do I need any special kit?

No, we’ll provide the boats & paddles, as well as the safety equipment to get paddling, we just ask you dress appropriate and bring a towel.

What should I wear?

Sports/active wear is good. A t-shirt and swimming shorts/tracksuit trousers, However we’ll provide a CAG to cover your torso from water, however you will get wet, be it from splashes in the water or the rain so please wear clothing you don’t mind getting wet. But please don’t wear jeans or cotton/fleece tracksuits as these absorb water and make paddling unsafe.  Footwear wise, please wear footwear you don’t mind getting wet.

Should I bring anything else?

A change of clothes is essential, you don’t want to be walking home in wet clothes, also a towel and a change of shoes. There is changing facilities so you can leave your belongings in the changing rooms.

Is it easy, safe, dangerous?

We have a team of trained students who’ve been on various BCU courses who’ll be on the water providing coaching and assistance, The Brayford Pool is a flat body so no waves or choppy water will make this great for a first time paddling. The kit you’ll be wearing is also safe and keep you afloat if you accidentally fall in. While the Brayford pool might look questionable some days, however the Environmental Agency has deemed the water perfectly safe to paddle on.

Overall, it’s safe and the easy to paddle on the Brayford.

Where should I meet?

We meet at the Lincoln Canoe Club, based on campus, it the building near the Minerva building (formally M.A.B), to find it walk down the road/path as if you were heading to the level crossing.

Happy Paddling!

Hello Freshers 2015

A big welcome to new and returning students of the University of Lincoln, and well done if you’ve just secured your place. With Freshers Week and moving in weekend fast approaching we’d like to let you in on some of the canoe & kayaking you can get upto in Lincoln during your study and what to look forward to!

blog post-01

Kayaking? Yes, kayaking.

While you might be loading the car full of stationery, books and the odd cheap bottle of vodka, you might of not thought of kayaking or canoeing. Whereas some of you might be paddle in the hand ready to arrive next month, whatever your situation we welcome everyone no matter ability into our team. This blog post we’ll give you some advice and tell you what’s happening if you want to get into this sport.

Who we are?

We are L.U.C.K, University team for Canoeing & Kayaking. We meet up weekly to paddle on open water in Lincoln and surrounding rivers, as well as weekly indoor pool sessions to learn skills. We also travel across the country to paddle different rivers and go surf kayaking on the cornish coast once a year. Kayaking & Canoeing is a great sport and it’s much easier to get into then you think. We as a club provide the basic kit to get you started and with a mix level of ability, you can learn skills from other members as we are happy to help each other out. It’s also cheaper as membership is just £55 for the academic year, covering all equipment use costs & Wednesday Session costs. We also have a thriving social side, from club nights to bowling.

You can see what we’ve been upto over the past year over on our facebook page. www.facebook.com/lincolnunikayak

Sounding good, want to get involved?

If this is sounding good, Fantastic. It’s really easy to get involved with L.U.C.K. Here’s how: Visit us at the Sports Faye on the Wednesday of Freshers Week we’ll have a stand where you can ask questions and speak to us face-to-face. Then we host 4 taster sessions, 2 on the 23rd Sept, and the 30th Sept, both 2pm & 3pm on those days pick a day to come down and have a go for an hour, free of charge. (More information will be updated on this blog soon) If you enjoy that then we encourage you to join up. We also want you to feel free to ask us as many questions as you need to. So you can e-mail us over at canoe@lincolnsu.com or message us on Facebook.

What should I bring from home?

If you are planning to pack we have some simple suggestions:

  • Sports Kit: With so many sports on campus and wanting you to try out during the first couple of weeks, pack some sports clothing so you can have a go. For kayaking we recommend, lightweight t-shirts, tracksuit bottoms/shorts etc.. We don’t recommend fleece pants or denim as these can absorb water and be uncomfortable to paddle in.
  • Thermals & Wet Gear: Got some thermals & baselayers, bring them if you want to join in. During the winter months it can get cold, these provide an extra layer to keep you warm when paddling. Wet Gear? Got a wet suit or some boardie shorts? These are great to bring along, as well as simple swimming shorts.
  • Footwear: Let’s be honest, you might fall into the water in this sport, don’t worry everyone does. So be prepared to get your shoes covered in river water and the rest, so if you have a set of old shoes you don’t mind getting wet, bring those, no studs however.

This and some common sense (a towel) you’ll be ready to get paddling without footing a bill for stuff you already had at home.

Wait? What About that expensive kayaking gear?

Just like all sports, Kayaking & Canoeing has specialist kit, which can be very expensive. We do not need you to have any specialist clothing/kit to join in. As a club we provide members with enough of the kayaking gear to get started. A buoyancy aid (BA) CAG A waterproof overlayer, Decks a piece of kit to stop water getting into the boat  and helmets when needed. We also provide paddles and a boat.

Previous paddler, have you own kit already?

Then we welcome you to bring your own kit along. Each year members join with various amount of kits, We also can store your boat & paddle in our secure store with the rest of the club boats. If you thinking of bringing your own boat or paddle then get in touch and we’ll explain how to do this.

So what now until the Sports Fayer?

If you like the idea of joining us and giving kayaking a go that’s great, we already mentioned some things you can pack if you want to get involved about. But here is some things you can do in the meantime as well:

If you have any questions feel free to e-mail us canoe@lincolnsu.com

And we look forward to seeing you in September!

Happy Paddling.
