River Wye Canoe Trip

Well what can you do if you didn’t quite make it up to NSR, keep paddling of course! And why not because this weekend turned out to be a great success, With it being low season on the Wye allowed us to leisurely paddle 30 miles across 2 days, with plenty of camping in-between making it for a great weekend canoeing, regardless if a rabbit was running around or not. Will we make it back to the Wye soon? ‘Wye not ‘ey’

Committee Elections

An always fun couple of weeks as members vote and discuss who should be on the next years committee and help run the club, this year saw loads of people applying for roles right across the committee and was a great competition to see play out. If you want to see who are on the committee at the moment check out the committee page on this blog here.

Newquay

Our annual week long trip to Newquay was welcomed back in April. Unfortunately poor weather hindered the amount of paddling we did but that did not stop us having a great time when the waters & surf was safe to paddle in!

10 years of L.U.C.K

After a long awaited build up for this celebration of our 10 year anniversary, in April team members from our 10 year history were invited back to Lincoln to celebrate on the 18th of April, with the NSR DJ’s, our fashionable hoodies on display and 1000+ photos slide showing though out it was a great night to celebrate the great achievement.

Wales

Our new events organisers were keen to visit wales before the year closed and hosted a weekend away in North Wales, white water kayaking, With a full bunk house and plenty of thermals the weekend was a success! Despite the river levels, now we are just waiting for some photos..

These are just highlights of our year to date and we’d love to share all of what we’ve been up to however there has been so much. But as always you can look back onto this blog to see what we’ve been up to as well as our  Facebook and Twitter.

Happy paddling!

Christmas comes early for L.U.C.K!

We are pleased to share some great news for the club, on Thursday 3rd December the committee was successful in applying for Sports Development funding from Sports Committee, and as such we are on track to replace and gain some new kit for the new year!

blog helmets-01

After applying for £296.10 and successfully passing with a full vote from sports committee we are please to say we now have the funding to purchase the new following kit.

10 brand new Lomo spray decks  and 3 brand Gul Evo 1 new helmets in yellow/green!

President Ewan Morrison & Events organiser Will Johnson presented the case to sports committee after Kit Secretary Ted Gravestock sourced the appropriate kit to apply for. This also means more of our own funds from self-raised activities and your membership costs can now be allocated to more kit needed including upgrading our first aid kits, river knifes and throwlines.

Overall this means with the addition of our 2 new club boats & 5 new bouncy aids last year, added with the new paddles already purchased this year, efforts from fundraising and the cost of membership can already be seen to be paying off.

We are now looking at increasing the number of CAGs for members.

So Christmas came early indeed! But don’t forget it’s our Christmas Meal on Tuesday, those who are coming; we are meeting at 6pm at Walkabout for what should be a festive night of fun!

Happy Paddling!

Christmas is coming!

CORRECTION: The last pool session will now take place on the 29th of  November, this is due to issues with the pool operator

Can you believe it, the end of the term is not far away! So we’ll break down what is happening between now and the end of term in 4 weeks.

1. Intro trip 2

If you missed the first one or never been then this is a great chance for you to join us for another intro to white water trip. This is essential in learning the basic skills needed for paddling on white water. This will be taking place on Sunday the 22nd and it’ll be a day trip to Matlock in Derbyshire. If you want to come along then e-mail the club ASAP to grab a place.

2. December wales trip

This trip is making a welcome return! The weekend away to wales right in the middle of December sounds like a bad idea, but however it promises to be a great weekend of paddling and with no tents in sight as we are kipping up in a bunkhouse for the weekend. It’ll be cold but it’ll be fun, and isn’t that what kayaking is all about.  Members should of got an e-mail about attending this trip and more information.

3. Christmas meal

This is a big one! The annual L.U.C.K Christmas Meal will be taking place this year on the 8th of December at Walkabout. This is a formal affair so dress to impress and enjoy a night of festive food, awards and VIP treatment at Home. More information about pricing will be up soon once we get it. But clear your dairy and prep those outfits!

4. Hoodies & Midlayers

We’ll be placing our order with Player Layer for hoodies & mid layers this month, but before we do we need to receive payments. If you’ve placed an order than please can you pay for Canoe & Kayak Hoodie or MidLayer at the SU reception before Tuesday the 24th of November.

5. Last sessions

The last session this year will be on the 9th of December, this aligns with all SU sports teams sessions which end on the 13th of December, however there will not be a pool session on the 13th due to the wales trip. The last pool session will take place on the 29th of November.

6.Other dates for your dairy

And finally we have some dates for 2016 which you might want to make free for some more paddling awesomeness!

4th – 6th of March is NSR, one of our key weekends away!

19th – 26th of March (first week of the easter break) is our provisional dates for our trip to Newquay, so clear your calendar once again.

See you all at these amazing events!

Happy Paddling!

Hoodies 2015/16

With nights now much longer and the temperature dropping, it seems a good time for our annual hoodie order, and even more exciting this being our best hoodie ever.

PLAYER LAYER COVER PHOTO-01

And for the first time as well we are going to be offering 2 choices of leisurewear this year. But let’s give you a briefing on why this years hoodies are some of the best we’ve ever produced. In the end of last year the Students’ Union and Sports Committee took part in selecting a standard sports kit provider for the sports teams at the University. Player Layer was chosen due to the high quality of kit they produce and ensured good customer service.

As being a sports team, we come under this bracket and this year we’ve chosen to stick the new standardised colours/kit for sports teams across campus and choose our hoodies to be provided by Player Layer.

So why is this good news? The Player Layer quality of kit is some of the best we’ve ever used on our hoodies. Created with a PL 600 Polycotton fleece, it aims to provide a comfortable, casual fit. And using a polyester core it also provides flexibility.  So you can see the quality is extremely good and just what is needed as now you can be assured you can wear your L.U.C.K colours with pride, while remaining warm.

These hoodies will be priced at £30.30 this year. And feature a striking Lincoln SU emblem on the front, our logo on the back (as always), the Player Layer logo on one arm and the chance for names to be placed on the other arm. The price has been reduced from the standard Player Layer price to offer even better value to members. And to anyone who wants to know, the 10 years of L.U.C.K logo will not make a return!

hoddie-01

As well as our annual hoodie we are even more excited to share with you the MidLayer, this new option for us has been chosen specifically for its practical use, made with a PL 700 mdlayerfabric this micr0-fleece featuring a smart quarter zip chest emblem design comes with a water replient finish, allow water to be brush off, perfect for when near water & rivers, which for our sport is a lot! It also has a smart University of Lincoln text on the back and our own logo on the arm. Providing a luxury design with durable practical quality.

These will be priced at £39.96, the same of the online price, but includes the chance for personalisation and the L.U.C.K logo design.

We hope you like the new options and if you want to place and order, please get in touch to us by Friday 16th November.

Happy Paddling!

Exciting developments for L.U.C.K

We are now well into the new year and Tyne Tour our first big trip on the year is well and truly in sight! With all this the committee has been working to being implementing developments within the club. And after meeting on Thursday we thought we’d share some plans for the year ahead.

Trips & Socials

With the new events organiser Will joining us for his first committee meeting in his role, the discussion about trips was well underway, Finalising plans for Tyne Tour. We are exciting to say this year we’ll return to producing our own t-shirts as a team, allowing for a more personal souvenir from this weekend, while designs are still being finalised we are having a maroon colour and we’ll be aiming to get these supplied at the lowest cost possible. The events organisers have sent an e-mail out already about attending Tyne Tour, so please check your inbox about that.

For further than Tyne Tour, discussions were made about future trips, these including the dates of NSR in March (4th – 6th March) and the Easter trip, which is usually a week long trip to Newquay, discussions were made the split these trips and take the chance to take the club to a new destination, and spend a weekend surf-kayaking at a coast location nearer Lincoln. While no plans were set in stone, something exciting can only come out from this!

Kit

With a new Kit Supplier for the Students’ Union sports clubs this year, the committee have decided in the interest of the SU aims of a new supplier to go with such supplier in providing the teams hoodies this year. While we costs will be more, the dramatically increased quality of garment and sense of union with other sports teams in Lincoln will outweigh the price increase.  It was decided it’s key to keep the L.U.C.K Identity on the new kit as much as we can, as such Ted the Kit Seretaty is to speak to Player Layer and discuss the options of keeping the L.U.C.K logo on the new kit. We’ll be getting these ordered as soon as we can but in the meantime we ask members to refrain from ordering Kit from the Player Layer website individually as these don’t feature the L.U.C.K logo.

hoddie-01

It was also decided that new Kit was needed for the club to paddle with. Ted has already ordered new paddles to replace the outdated paddles and ones we lost last year to damage (Adam.. 😉 ). The cost of these came to around £200 and this is for 5 brand new paddles.  It was also decided the club needed to update its CAGS. As well as to address the shortage when large groups attended and the age/effectiveness of the current club ones. Ted is to source some quotes for these. DECKS also was discussed from last years committee, due to the essential need for decks to paddle within the club, it was discussed if to apply for development fund to pay for these. However due to the essential need for these kits it was not worth risking not getting new decks by relying on a un-gaurenteed source of money.

Communications

After asking for feedback from last years members about communications, Josh (Web & Media Officer) received 10 responses, and 90% agreed the current method of communication is sufficient, however Josh pointed out that some members are still unaware of what’s happening within the club. As such Josh addressed the importance of making sure that e-mails are sent out at a timely manner and that all activities are placed of the Facebook members group, the public Facebook Page, and the Twitter account.  But due to the 90% satisfaction rate, no new forms of communications  or dramatic improvements need to be pursued at this time.

Coaching/Development

Feedback from last year showed that some members lack the interest in developing personal boating skills, and as such find it difficult to remain interested in the club. To keep people intrested this year the committee have decided the create a skill sheet, this simple checklist allows members to keep a track of the skills learnt and what they need to know in order of achieve a British Canoeing 2* paddler award at the end of year assessment. Overall we are hoping this low cost & simple methord will achieve greater interest in learning skills. Members should get this later this month in an e-mail.

And that’s it for now! All this work is done by your committee members, all the time they give is free and for the interest of the wider club, and if you think there is an issue to address or have an idea you think we need to know, just get in touch 😀 ! One of us it always at a pool or Brayford session just come say hello! We also have an e-mail address canoe@lincolnsu.com or drop us a Facebook message.

Happy Paddling!
